Two Homes, One Heart: Giving Children A Voice In The Middle Of Adult Conflict

Two Homes, One Heart: Giving Children a Voice in the Middle of Adult Conflict

When a marriage or partnership reaches a breaking point, the adults involved are often consumed by a whirlwind of legal filings, financial disclosures, and logistical shifts. In the rush to resolve these adult problems, the quietest voices in the room—the children—are often expected to adjust without a roadmap.

At Two Homes One Heart (THOH), we believe that children shouldn’t have to “just get through it.” They deserve the tools to understand, process, and protect their own well-being during one of the most vulnerable chapters of their lives.

A Child-Centred Program to Fill a Critical Gap

Founded by Calgary experts Krysta H. Ostwald, KC, and Andrea LaRochelle, THOH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth through family transitions. It provides trauma-informed, skills-based education for children aged 6 to 11 and teens aged 12 to 18 who have been impacted by separation, divorce, high-conflict family situations, or domestic violence.

Unlike many systems that focus on coaching parents, THOH speaks directly to children using age‑appropriate workbooks and guided learning to help young people:

  • Disengage from adult conflict
  • Regulate emotions
  • Set boundaries
  • Communicate effectively
  • Build resilience

What Makes THOH Different?

Our program is built on the understanding that the brain is shaped early through experience, communication patterns, and emotional regulation. By teaching children conflict management skills, emotional literacy, and effective communication at developmentally appropriate stages, we can interrupt patterns that too often emerge later in life.

In high-conflict families, children cannot always wait for their parents to stop fighting before they find peace. Our program provides a sanctuary of skills that a child can access independently and without parental involvement. We offer an online, self-guided path to safety and language that works even if the home environment remains chaotic.

Kids in the Crossfire

Children and teens affected by separation, high-conflict divorce, or domestic violence are frequently caught in an emotional crossfire. Without even realizing it, they often find themselves:

  • Acting as the messenger between parents
  • Drawn into adult disagreements
  • Exposed to emotional manipulation or coercive control
  • Overlooked by legal and social systems designed mainly for adults

During these times, children can feel invisible, pressured, and unsafe. Without the language to describe what is happening, they can develop unhealthy long-term patterns and coping mechanisms, including alignment with one parent, addiction, relational breakdown, and chronic stress. This is why child-focused support matters so much.

The Service Gap: Leaving Children Behind

There are many conversations today about reducing conflict and keeping families out of court. Those are important goals. But too often, support systems are still focused almost entirely on adults.

The reality is:

  • Most supports place emphasis on the parents or the courts
  • For some families, therapy can be costly and difficult to access
  • Wait-lists can delay help when it is needed most
  • In high-conflict situations, traditional support options may not always feel safe or workable
  • Few child-centred, self-guided, trauma-informed tools exist, especially online

This gap leaves many children without meaningful support during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives. THOH directly addresses it by giving children and teens the language, skills, and internal safety they need without requiring parents to cooperate or change.

The Path Forward

THOH is already changing lives, but the need continues to grow. We are currently seeking funding and partnerships to enhance the program’s impact. Our goals include:

  • Enhancing program quality and development
  • Developing video content to support learning
  • Providing interactive Q&A features for children and teens
  • Offering printed workbook options for greater accessibility

Help Us Support Calgary’s Children

Every child deserves to feel safe, heard, and less alone. By providing trauma-informed programming designed specifically for the child’s experience, we are helping the next generation break the cycle of conflict.
