Danusia began her career as a lawyer in Calgary, first as a Crown Prosecutor and then as a criminal defence lawyer, before deciding to practice exclusively in family law. Danusia is often asked how her passion in law could range from criminal law to family law, and the answer is easy: in both areas of law Danusia has had the privilege of helping individuals and families in difficult situations, which is her reason for practicing law.
Divorce, separation, and the restructuring of a family are incredibly challenging life experiences. These are experiences that change people and have lifelong consequences. Danusia considers it an honour and privilege to be invited by her clients to assist and support them through these difficult times.
As clients struggle through these life events, Danusia helps make sense of the law and guides her clients through the process that will most suit them, their children, and their circumstances. Those processes may include settlement, mediation, arbitration, and/or court. Danusia believes that family law clients will be best served and reach the most amicable resolution of their family matters, if they can work with their former domestic partner to resolve matters, with the assistance of their lawyers, through a form of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation or settlement negotiations, and Danusia is experienced in helping clients achieve their desired results through those processes.
However, there are those cases that cannot be resolved and must be litigated. This is where Danusia’s 22 years of courtroom experience benefits her clients. As a former Crown Prosecutor, criminal defence lawyer, and now family lawyer, Danusia has conducted hundreds of trials and appeals at all levels of court in Alberta: the Alberta Court of Justice, the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. Due to her vast courtroom experience and excellent advocacy skills, many of Danusia’s clients are those that require a litigator – a lawyer that can effectively present a case to a judge or arbitrator.
Danusia’s clients tend to be those that require a strong litigator; her clients are those in domestically violent relationships from which they have escaped and now require a strong lawyer to ensure their family law claims are pursued and they are not intimidated by their former domestic partner.
Danusia’s clients are also those who face former domestic partners who refuse to settle, negotiate or mediate and want to drag out the divorce/separation process. These are situations that may require court or arbitration and Danusia is experienced at assisting these clients.
Divorce and/or separation is not easy for clients – it is emotionally, mentally, physically, and financially exhausting. The process should be fair and equitable. When it isn’t, Danusia is there to support, guide, and fight for her clients.
